The Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department was recently awarded funds from a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant to purchase 2,500 smoke alarms for free distribution and installation for Murfreesboro residents.
The Fire Department purchased dual detection smoke alarms which utilize ionization and photoelectric sensors. The combination smoke alarms are responsive to both flaming and smoldering fires.
Installing several smoke alarms will provide better coverage in the extreme cases of long-term smoldering or fast flaming fires. Most importantly, enough alarms should be installed in the proper locations.
The department also obtained 100 audio/visual smoke alarms and 100 “bed-shakers” for the elderly, disabled, and hearing-impaired. This new campaign coincides with the Fire Department's Project S.A.F.E. program, implemented in 2000, promoting “Smoke Alarms for Everyone.”
Smoke alarms are available now.
Residents may stop by the nearest fire station or call Fire Administration at 615-893-1422.
Those in need of audio and visual alarms or “bed-shakers” will be placed on a list, and appointments will be scheduled for installation and brief education on usage of these special alarms. |
