Long, crowded road to 2012 election

When current Rutherford County Road Superintendent Mike Williams announced he wasn’t going to seek a sixth term in 2012, many thought this could be their year.

The Republican ticket is crowded in 2012. Along with Buddy Gambill, Greg Brooks, County Commissioner Joe Frank Jernigan and Robert Alsup have thrown their hats into the ring.

The Democratic side is thin at this point, with only B.J. Smotherman filing his paperwork with the Rutherford County Election Commission.

Rutherford County Engineer Del Corbett has also filed as an independent and will be featured on the August ballot.

Any other interested candidates have until noon Thursday to pick up and return their paperwork to the Election Commission, located at 1 South Public Square in Murfreesboro.

Qualified candidates also have until noon Dec. 15 to withdraw from the race.

Thereafter, ballots will be printed for the March primary’s early voting, which will be held Feb. 15 through Feb. 28. The primary encompasses the presidential preference primary and primaries for Rutherford County road superintendent and property assessor.

The last day for voter’s to register is Feb. 6 to cast a ballot in the election.
