The Lon Nuell Family Literacy Center had an open house and dedication ceremony to honor the legacy of Lon Nuell, as well as the beginnings of a vibrant community literacy center.
“The community opening of the Literacy center was a great success, with a turnout of over 80 people coming to the literacy center for the ribbon cutting” Shaw said. “Mayors Burgess and Bragg were there to execute the ribbon cutting as well as Sen. Tracy and Rep. Hood.”
The Literacy Center is being dedicated to the memory of Nuell, who by many accounts was a great man. He was highly active in the Jewish community of Middle Tennessee, and was someone who fought for children and the importance of education.
Nuell was a member of the Murfreesboro City School Board for 12 years as well as a 37-year veteran art professor at MTSU.
Nuell is remembered for many accomplishments that he achieved throughout his life; his teaching of many subjects that include, fine arts, holocaust education and stressing the importance of literacy in everyday life.
“The purpose of the Literacy Center is to bring together members of the community who provide literacy services so that we can focus our efforts and find the gaps and holes in the programs and allow people to develop their literacy skills,” said Ronnie Shaw, Read To Succeed director.
The ceremony was held from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 in room 210 of the First Baptist Church Education Building on the corner of Vine and Spring streets in Murfreesboro.
The Literacy Center is a collaborative effort between Read To Succeed; a nonprofit organization in Rutherford County whose mission it is to educate people in the community about literacy, and to offer a place where they can come and learn and have the opportunity to develop their personal literacy skills.
While the new Literacy Center is not a part of the RTS operation, RTS really was the motivating entity that the Literacy Center is being modeled after Shaw said.
