The coming-of-age movie filmed in Shelbyville three summers ago that launched the acting career of a Murfreesboro native is heading to DVD.

“Our Very Own,” starring Allison Janney and Jason Ritter, will be available in video stores July 3.

The film is being released by Miramaz Films/Disney/Buena Vista Home Entertainment. The DVD is available for pre-order now at www.amazon.com. “Our Very Own” debuted on the STARZ Channel in December 2006.

The semi-autobiographical film — written and directed by Shelbyville native Cameron Watson — follows five friends on the cusp of adulthood in 1978. It is about their dream of making it to Hollywood like fellow Shelbyville native Sondra Locke, who appeared with Clint Eastwood in six films.

The low-budget film was executive produced by Murfreesboro businessman Robert McLean.

MTSU graduate Derek Carter also starred in the film, and the experience changed his life.

Through connections he made while working on the film, Carter got the opportunity to study with the renowned Groundlings comedy troupe and then a role on the racy and largely improvised sitcom "Campus Ladies" that airs on the Oxygen Network.

"Our Very Own" gained some attention and acclaim through screenings at a variety of film festivals in 2006. The film won the Ensemble Acting Award from the Sarasota Film Festival, the Special Jury Prize from the Rome International Film Festival and the Grand Prize in the Bluegrass Independent Film Festival.

Allison Janney was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her role in the film in 2006.
