One of the fastest growing sports in the nation, mixed martial arts, made another stop in Murfreesboro last Saturday for a 11-fight card put on by the Georgia-based, SportFight X, organization for Middle Tennessee Mayhem.
The card was marked with a mixture of amateur and professional fights that including several fighters from other MMA companies like the UFC and Strikeforce.
One local fighter, Alex Anderson thrilled the crowd during the second fight of the evening with a second round TKO of Kevin Miles.
During a pre-match interview about two hours before the fight, Anderson was excited about fighting in the city where he trains.
“It’s going to be great, looking forward to putting a beating on this kid in front of the home crowd,” Anderson said.
When the fight started, Anderson looked like he was going to have a short night after taking a few punches from the southpaw. He recovered, however, as the fight moved to the ground.
One of his coaches, Nate Rice, who trains him at Nemesis MMA, felt Anderson was not hurt at all during the fight and it took some adjusting to his opponent’s southpaw style.
Late in the first round, Anderson gained control of his opponent on the ground. All of the amateurs fight were three rounds with each one lasting three minutes each.
Both fighters traded blows in the beginning of the second round, but Anderson was able to get him to the ground. He, then, landed several shots on Miles while on the ground.
Miles was unable to defend himself, and the referee stopped the match 2:32 into the second round.
Anderson improved his amateur record to 8-1 with the crowd giving him a big ovation when he was announced as the victor.
“They were awesome,” Anderson said after the fight. “I can’t thank them enough.”
Coming into the fight, Anderson was the Featherweight champion in a different organization and was ranked No. 5 amateur in the state in his weight division by the website aroundtheoctogon.com.
“Alex is a very talented fighter,” Rice said. “He picks up things really fast. He is a hard worker and he is always working on stuff. He is always the first one there and the last one to leave.”
Besides training at Nemesis, Anderson also works on his ground game at Guardian MMA with a former contestant of the reality television show, “The Ultimate Fighter” and Murfreesboro native, Shane Primm. On Wednesday, Anderson works with the MTSU wrestling team.
Speaking of former reality TV stars, Jeremiah “Big Rig” Riggs, who was on the VH1 show “Daisy of Love,” won a controversial decision over Eric Slocum that included several low blows to his opponent.
In the third round, Slocum delayed the fight after what looked like an illegal knee to the head while down.
After Riggs was announced as the winner, boos rained down from the crowd and he returned the sentiment with a rude gesture.
During his post fight interview, Riggs added some disrespectful comments about women and then dedicated the win to his mother, who just had heart surgery.
In the co-main event, Scott “The Bear” Barrett defeated Michael Wessel in the 265-pound division.
In the main event, it was a thrilling back-and-forth showdown between Matt Traylor and Zach Underwood that went the distance with Underwood winning by a split decision.
After the fight, Underwood limped out of the cage with what looked like a hurt knee. |
