The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties hosted its annual Day of Action on Friday, May 21st, with more than 250 volunteers participating in community service projects for 20 local agencies and schools at 25 sites in Middle Tennessee. The Day of Action, which unites companies, organizations, and community volunteers with local agencies and schools, included such service projects as landscaping, painting, and delivering meals to those in need. United Way coordinates the Day of Action to offer the opportunity for not only the agencies and schools to receive needed services, but to allow the community to further develop relationships with and witness first-hand the needs involved with those agencies and schools.

This year’s Day of Action sponsors were Florence & Hutcheson Consulting Engineers, General Mills, and Regions Bank. Blackman Elementary School and Wal-mart also provided in-kind donations. Currently, the agencies and schools provide the materials required to complete the projects while United Way recruits and coordinates the volunteers for the Day of Action. However, United Way recently applied for a $25,000 grant through Pepsi’s Refresh Everything grant program that, if received, would cover the expenses of materials and equipment for the Day of Action. United Way will learn on June 1st if the grant has been approved by Pepsi for a voting process that would allow the public to vote on Refresh Everything grant applications in order to determine the recipients. If United Way were a recipient, the grant would be applied toward the next Day of Action.
