If you have read this Thursday column previously you know that each week the focus is on a single habit or concept that may enhance your life.
This week's column is about making a habit of having more than enough time.
This concept of having “more than enough” can apply to many aspects of life.
For example it can be a great stress reducer to regularly have more than enough time, money, friends, etc.
Everyone gets in a hurry from time to time.
Unfortunately, these are the times when we are most likely to have accidents and make mistakes.
Many injuries occur when we are late or rushing to do something.
A patient came to see me recently about a knee injury.
He has twisted his leg some time ago while getting something out of his car.
He told me that he was running late and was rushing to unload his car so he could hurry up and go run another errand.
He accidentally turned abruptly and felt pain in his knee and leg.
The accident had occurred several months before he came to see me.
He had already been to two other doctors and had some other therapy which had not helped.
As we talked about his injury, he told me “I knew better than to turn like that. My footing was unsteady and I should have stopped to take my time. If I had just taken an extra second I would have avoided all this pain and expense.”
The details of his story are unique to his scenario, but the general theme is repeated often in our clinic. “I knew better but I was in a hurry.”
Having more than enough time can be even more difficult than having more than enough money.
There are numerous ways each of us can obtain more money if we choose to, but none of us can ever obtain more time.
Time is a commodity that is limited to 24 hours each day, not matter who we are.
The only way we can have more than enough time is to closely guard how we use the time that we have.
Many people had used the expression that they are just killing time.
The term “time killer” is so appropriate.
After realizing that we have spent an hour or two doing something that has no value to our lives, it can be disheartening to realize that we will never have that time again to use wisely.
We truly have destroyed that time and it can never be regained.
When we find ourselves short of time, making better choices of how we use our time is much more effective than hurrying.
If we choose how to use our time wisely so that we do not become rushed, the results will be fewer accidents and mishaps, and a greater feeling of control over our lives.
This weeks suggested habit is that of becoming more aware of exactly how we spend each minute, and making choices so that we will have more than enough time.
You may even want to try keeping a log of how you spend your time for a week or so.
Agree to do the things that are actually important and appropriate, but find ways to decline things that are simply time killers.
By doing so, you may find that you already have more than enough time when the limited amount of time that you have is used wisely.
