Nathan Maynard of Spring Hill's Heritage Hurricanes took a 3-2 pitch and crushed it over the fence to win the game with a walk-off grand slam.
Some of the best youth baseball teams from around the Southeast traveled to Murfreesboro for the 3rd annual BPA Spring Classic at Barfield Crescent Park and McKnight Park last weekend.

There was some great action from all of the different age groups ranging from 6 to 12 years old. Several memorable moments took place Friday and Saturday, but the tournament portion of the event was rained out Sunday.

One of those moments came on Saturday afternoon during the 11U (11 years old and under) division game between the Heritage Hurricanes out of Spring Hill and the Ringgold (Ga.) Cannons. Both teams came into the mid-afternoon contest with undefeated records; the Cannons were 2-0, while the Hurricanes were 1-0.

Just making the trip to the tournament was an accomplishment for the Cannons since earlier in the week; their town was hit by an EF-4 tornado. There were questions if the team was going to travel to the event, but they decided to come.

It was a back and forth game with the Cannons ahead 8-6 heading into the final inning. However, the Hurricanes loaded the bases and with no outs, Nathan Maynard took a 3-2 pitch and crushed it over the fence to win the game.

“We got the bases loaded and they threw one down the middle and I nailed it,” Maynard said after his huge home run. “As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone.”

A teammate’s father retrieved the ball and gave it to Maynard. He later wrote the date and the score of the game on the ball. His teammates also autographed the ball.

It was his fifth home run of the season. Maynard said long-time Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones is his favorite player and he hopes one day to play for the team.

The home run became the talk of the event as people were coming up to him and congratulating him on his game-winner.

After getting a quick bite to eat, the Hurricanes faced the Murfreesboro-based Raptors in a night game. Coming into the game, the Hurricanes improved to 2-0, while the Raptors were 1-0. This was the first one of back-to-back games for the Raptors that evening.

The Raptors scored once in the top of the first, but the Hurricanes answered with eight in the bottom half of the inning. However, the Raptors defense buckled down and only gave up two runs the rest of the game. The offense was slowly making a comeback with three in the second inning, and two more in the third.

The age group’s games are six innings, however there is also a time limit. That would play a factor is this game. The Raptors clawed all the way back in the top of the fourth by cutting the lead down to one, 9-8. However, their base runner was caught in a rundown for the second out. The next Raptor batter struck out to end the inning. The Hurricanes added a run in bottom portion and time ran out.

The Hurricanes finished a perfect 3-0 with the 10-8 win. A few minutes later, the Raptors were back on the field and bounced back with a 10-7 win over the Murfreesboro-based Patriots.

Another team that was turning heads during the three-day event was the 12U Boro Bulls, who went a perfect 2-0 without giving up a single run. The Bulls outscored opponents by a combined 32-0.

“We have been hitting the ball and our pitching has been really good,” Boro Bulls pitcher Nathan Luther said.

Those two wins included a 20-0 victory over the Bullets on Friday and a 12-0 mark against the Murf C Tigers on Saturday. The team was supposed to start the tournament bright and early at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning, but the rains came and wiped out the day’s action. Boro Bulls head coach Brad Stocks added this was the team’s first tournament and he is still trying to get to know his players.

In July, the BPA 2011 World Series will take place in Murfreesboro.
