“Literacy is important. It’s not just about teaching one person to read but teaching many people,” Read to Succeed Executive Director Ronni Shaw said.

To celebrate the importance of volunteers in the organization’s effort to increase literacy throughout the county, many were honored with Greenhouse Ministries taking home the top prize.

“For every one person getting an awrd there were at least three people or entities we thought could have gotten it,” Shaw said.

Greenhouse Ministries Director Cliff Sharp received the Karen Claud Read to Succeed Award for his work to increase literacy.

“Under Cliff’s guidance literacy matters and is available to all,” County Mayor Ernest Burgess said, when presenting Sharp with his award.

Greenhouse Ministries provided for the material, educational and spiritual needs to more than 11,000 members of the Murfreesboro community last year. Along with offering food to the needy, the organization also offers GED tutoring, computer classes, job referrals and literacy training to those in need of help.

Other honorees include:
- Tutor of the Year Judith Russell
- Learner of the Year Robert Carlton
- Volunteer of the Year John Glasgow
- Council Members of the Year Kim White and Jennifer McGrew
- Community Volunteer of the Year Carlene Hurst
- Best City School Involvement – Bellwood-Bowdoin Preschool
