| This holiday season, Linebaugh Public Library System hopes to encourage the community to not only borrow but also to give.
During the month of December, the Linebaugh, Smyrna, Eagleville, and Myrtle Glanton Lord library branches will display Giving Trees. Ornaments on the Giving Trees feature books, audiobooks, and DVDs from the libraries’ wishlists, items that the library might otherwise be unable to purchase.
“We know the holidays bring out a giving spirit in many. The Giving Trees are an easy way for people to show their support for their local public library,” LPLS Director Rita Shacklett said.
Other ornaments give the option of making a donation to the library’s adult or juvenile bookfund. Donations can be made in any amount. Contributions to the Giving Tree program are tax-deductible.
Donations may be given in memory of someone who has passed away, or as a tribute to honor a family member, friend, or colleague, Shacklett said.
“By selecting a book from our Giving Tree, you can make a contribution in honor of that hard-to-shop-for person on your list, or in memory of a loved one, while helping to expand the library’s collection,” she said.
The library will place a bookplate in selected books identifying both the donor and the honoree. Those who make a contribution in honor or in memory of someone will be given a card which the donor can send to notify the honoree or the honoree’s family of the contribution.
This is the third year for the LPLS Giving Tree program. In 2009, Linebaugh and Smyrna Libraries received more than $2400 in donations through the program.
