No matter what book format you prefer – be it listening to audiobooks in your car or on your MP3 player, reading on an e-book reader, or flipping the pages of a print book – Linebaugh Public Library System has you covered.

“Technology is driving a change in what the concept of a ‘book’ is for people,” said Jerianne Thompson, Collection Development Coordinator for LPLS. “The library wants to provide books for our patrons in all the formats they want to access, as much as possible within our budget.”

In addition to the regular, large-print, and audio books that the library has shelved for decades, LPLS also offers:

Downloadable audio books and e-books, via R.E.A.D.S. Accessible at www.linebaugh.org, R.E.A.D.S. is a statewide digital media service, which features thousands of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books. Users can listen to audio books on their Windows or Mac computer, burn them to CDs, or download them to an MP3 player or iPod. E-books can be downloaded to various e-book readers; the list of compatible devices can be found on the R.E.A.D.S. website.

Reference and educational e-books. Through LPLS’s online resources – including Tennessee Electronic Library, LearningExpress Library, and the Testing & Educational Reference Center – library users can access hundreds of e-books for G.E.D., school, and licensing exams; math, reading, and writing study guides; plus health encyclopedias and other reference books.

Playaway audio books. “A Playaway is a pre-loaded digital player. Each Playaway holds an entire audio book. It’s lightweight and very portable,” Thompson said. Users can listen to a Playaway using headphones or they can connect it to their home or car stereo using an FM transmitter, a cassette adapter, or a direct connect cable. “Many stereos have an auxiliary audio input for plugging in an MP3 player; these can also be used to plug in a Playaway,” Thompson said. LPLS currently has about 150 titles available on Playaway systemwide.

MP3 CDs. While a regular CD book may include eight or more disks, most books on MP3 only take one or two disks, Thompson said. Users can listen to these audio books on their computer or can download them to an MP3 player or an iPod; many newer model cars can also play MP3 CDs. Linebaugh Library currently has about three dozen books on MP3 CD in its collection, including classic titles and new bestsellers, and will be adding more in the months to come. Some of these MP3 CDs also include an e-book version of the book.

“Print books still make up the largest portion of our checkouts, but we are starting to see our patrons using a variety of media for reading and listening,” said LPLS Director Rita Shacklett. “Rutherford County has had among the highest usage of R.E.A.D.S. in the state, and our Playaways have been quite popular. We hope to continue expanding the variety of formats we offer to local readers.”

This month, LPLS is conducting a survey to gauge Rutherford County’s interest in e-books; the survey can be completed at any LPLS branch or at www.linebaugh.org. “If the survey indicates significant interest in LPLS offering more e-books, we hope to seek grant funding to help us start a collection in addition to the e-books already offered through R.E.A.D.S.,” Shacklett said.

Linebaugh Public Library is located at 105 W. Vine St. in Murfreesboro, with additional branches in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Eagleville. I think it is great that Limbaugh has started using the R.E.A.D.S. service. It opens up a vast array of resources that people can use from home. The way that this works really is just like an online library. If you want to check out an e-book, you have to reserve one of the available copies. Each library system only has a certain amount of each e-book to lend. So, just like in an actual library, if there is only one e-book in stock, and it has already been checked out, you would have to wait for the lending period of the person who has checked it out to end.

R.E.A.D.S can be accessed pretty easily as well. You simply follow a link from the Limbaugh website, choose your library system, and enter your library card number. There is no online registration- as long as you are up to date in the library's records, you are able to use R.E.A.D.S. There is actually an added benefit of using R.E.A.D.S. that is not available with hard copy books. There is a rating system on the site that is used by the people who check out the books. So, you can view other opinions of a book first hand before you even check it out.
