Linebaugh Public Library encourages Rutherford County adults to delve into some good books over the next six weeks as part of its Winter Reading Program.

The program, set to begin Monday, will challenge Rutherford County adults to read one book a week and write a review of each book when completed.

“We are asking people to read six books in six weeks,” said David O’Flaherty, who is a librarian at Linebaugh.

The Winter Reading Program aims to promote literacy across the county and invites citizens to read whatever they choose.

“We don’t tell anyone what to read. You can read any book you want,” O’Flaherty said.

As an incentive to complete the program, some local businesses and organizations  have partnered together to offer some valuable prizes.

Barnes and Noble, Ingram Books, Read to Succeed, Maple Street Grill, and MTSU round out the list of hospitable donors.

One Book of Rutherford County, a local organization that promotes literacy, has donated six copies of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which will be given away to citizens reading and reviewing their way through the program.

Those participating will have the opportunity to win a variety of books, gift cards, and even a waiver for overdue fines at the library.

At the end of the program, one person will win a $100 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a $100 gift card to Maple Street Grill.

Generous prizes and getting into a good book, the Winter Reading Program offers a nice break in a tough economy, O’Flaherty explained.

The Winter Reading Program launched in 2002. In its first year, more than 100 residents signed up for the program, with 42 individuals completing the required number of books. Last year, 168 residents signed up while 81 successfully completed the program.

“It’s not nearly as big as the Summer Reading Program, which is geared at children, but we’ve had steady growth,” O’Flaherty said.

When asked what type of book residents most often read, O’Flaherty said it was quite a wide range of categories, but patrons tend to read a lot of mystery novels.

Anyone interested in participating can sign up at any time during the next six weeks.

To be eligible for the grand prize, individuals must complete six books and six reviews by March 3.
