Dozens of big black spiders hang above the Linebaugh Public Library circulation desk; in the children's library, the spiders have built huge spider cobwebs. But the library won't be calling an exterminator - these special arachnids and their webs are made of balloons.
These balloon creations were made by circulation supervisory clerk Hank Williams, as decorations for Halloween. Williams, who had a background in event planning before coming to work at the library, often makes special balloon creations for the library.
This year, the library features more than three dozen handmade balloon spiders, plus two huge spiders that can drop down on unsuspecting library visitors.
"Hank's balloons are so popular with the children who visit the library. Adults love them, too," said Rita Shacklett, director of Linebaugh Public Library System.
The balloons will be up for the remainder of this week. Families are invited to come in anytime during library hours, or to drop in during the annual Trick-or-Treat on the Square on Friday, October 30. Linebaugh Library will be giving out special goodies to library visitors on that day.
