NASHVILLE - Vanderbilt LifeFlight is going pink during October to show its support for breast cancer awareness.
 
LifeFlight medical crews will wear a special pink name badge on their flight suits and other staff will wear pink golf shirts.
 
October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer. The international campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
 
“Going pink is our way to show support for our colleagues at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, and to raise awareness for Breast Cancer,” said registered nurse Jeanne Yeatman, interim administrative director of Emergency Services for Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“LifeFlight will join a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies working together to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure,” she said.
 
More than 4,525 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in Tennessee in 2009. Of those, 413 were in Davidson County.

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center offers cutting-edge clinical research trials for breast cancer therapy, led by physicians and scientists who are members of an international breast cancer research “Dream Team” funded by Stand Up to Cancer.

These scientists have discovered new genetic fingerprints that explain why some breast cancers may or may not respond to specific therapies. This new research is helping physicians personalize cancer therapy for each patient.
