NASHVILLE – Representatives of Kroger and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) presented an $18,000 check to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during a special ceremony at a local Kroger store Tuesday.

The money comes from the sale of paper balloons at Kroger stores across the Middle Tennessee area during the month of July. The sale was a partner effort between Kroger and the UFCW to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night campaign. Proceeds help to fund critical blood cancer research.

“We’re so grateful that UFCW has been a longtime supporter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said Melissa Hudson-Gant, campaign director for Light The Night. “Its partnership with Kroger to sell these balloons has raised an incredible amount of money that will have a powerful impact on research and patient aid for LLS.”

The top balloon seller in the Middle Tennessee area was Kroger cashier Karen Darland, who raised $1,009 from her sales. Darland works at the Kroger at 2449 Old Fort Pkwy. in Murfreesboro. The top balloon-selling Kroger store was also the Kroger on Old Fort Parkway, raising a grand total of $2,907.
