To the editor:
The national media are telling us a lot about the status of the housing market around the country and it doesn't look good. Locally, we hear we are not as bad off as other places. It would be very helpful if the public in this county were given a good briefing on what is happening here. Bits and pieces tell about the number of foreclosures in certain parts of town and other stories tell about construction workers going home because of the slowdown.
Is there nobody or agency capable of giving an objective account of the economic picture here, starting with housing?
The planning departments of the city and county have good staffs but they already have a lot on their plates. The university has research units but may be preoccupied with other academic inquiries. Who can our political leaders count on to give them a thorough understanding of just what we will be facing in 2009? Inquiring minds want to know.
