To the editor:

When I told my wife earlier this year that I was considering accepting a teaching position at MTSU's school of journalism, she had some reservations about moving to the South from our home in California. I reassured her that as far as I could tell Rutherford County was a progressive community, judging from its political history, and that old stereotypes about bigoted southerners were largely fading away.

I guess I should have read your publication more thoroughly - it would have revealed that bigotry and ignorance still exist close to the surface in some parts of this town. I've worked for three major metro dailies and for many editors, not one of whom would have considered for a second publishing Lewis' column. I'm saddened that you, the editor of our local publication, decided to run it - it diminishes this community. I've also lived in many parts of the U.S., and know that bigotry is found everywhere, but never once have I seen one of my hometown papers give credence to such views. I hope that you will repudiate this column and start taking your editorial responsibilities more seriously.
