Amor. Lieben. Al-hubb. Oi. Love.

The day of romance, adoration and affection has finally arrived. Ladies, you’re probably excited to see what your honey has planned. Gentlemen, you may have been dreading this holiday for the past 364 days, but try and do something nice for your sweetheart. She’s sure to thank you for it.

Valentine’s Day snuck up on us this year, and chances are, you are frantically scrambling for something red, chocolate or shiny for your loved one. Have no fear; we’ve compiled a list of out-of-the-box gifts that your darling is sure to love!

Boro Town Cakes  |  128 N. Church St.
If your sweetheart has a sweet tooth, opt for a local made-from-scratch confection. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Murfreesboro, Boro Town Cakes has a slew of sugary, Valentine’s Day-themed goodness available.

Owner and baker Karen Stoltz said she has something for every palate and price range. If your lady likes rich chocolates, scoop up a box of four truffles for less than five bucks. Or bring your hubby a cookie bouquet arranged in a glass vase with six large cookies.

Still not ooey and gooey enough for your honey? How about cherry cheesecake bars or red velvet cupcakes with a chocolate center and cream cheese icing? Boro Town Cakes even has vanilla almond cake squares with buttercream frosting and Valentine’s Day decorations.

“We also have our regular items – blueberry muffins, coffee cakes, orange cranberry scores and no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies, which is always a favorite of everybody – and you can make your own Valentine box with any of the treats,” Stotz continued. “It’s very affordable. We’ve got things from a couple of dollars to however much you want to spend, which is always a plus. And we’ll wrap it up and make it look nice.”

She also suggested Valentine’s Day sugar cookies on a stick, which are individually wrapped.

“I always think of a grandmother who might come in and buy one for each of her granddaughters,” she said.

Mayday Brewery  |  527 Old Salem Highway
If your mate is a craft beer lover, this is sure to bring a smile to his (or her) face.

“We’ve got your Valentine gifts covered!” says owner Ozzy Nelson. “Share the love of local craft beer with the one you love.”

The local brewery is offering a “Sweetheart Deal” that includes a Jug of Fun, Mayday pint glass and T-shirt for $32. Or, head into Mayday together and take advantage of the “Twice as Sweet” deal that includes a Jug of Fun, two Mayday pint glasses and two T-shirts for $48.

Mayday will be open tonight from 4-8 p.m. and would be an enjoyable twist to the traditional Valentine’s Day date.

Five Senses Restaurant & Bar | 1602 W. Northfield Blvd., Ste. 515
Romantic dinners are a staple of Valentine’s Day. This year, why not spend your dollars at a local restaurant.

Five Senses Restaurant & Bar owner and chef Mitchell Murphree released his three-course menu for Valentine’s Day that is sure to get your mouth watering.

The first course is comprised of a roasted red pepper and tomato bisque or Fives’ Caesar salad, followed by a second course of grilled filet mignon, blackened redfish or torta di risotto. A third, and final, course offers raspberry lime terrine or chocolate truffle cakes to sweeten up the night.

Reservations were filling up fast, but there may still be some openings available. The cost is $85 per couple. If tonight doesn’t work in your schedule, make plans to visit this weekend for an equally tantalizing menu.

“Valentine’s Day always brings engagements,” Murphree added. “Don’t forget that we cater. Engagement party, rehearsal dinner, reception … we can do it all!”

Borovino  |  Embassy Suites Hotel
If you’re the kind of couple who loves going to wine tastings, get your significant other tickets to the 2nd Annual Borovino wine event.

Held at Embassy Suites from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, the festival will offer a wide variety of wine samples for attendees to enjoy, along with live entertainment. Tickets just went on sale this week and are available for $29 each at www.borovino.com.

Borovino will host a large range of wine selections, from local to international varietals, provided by Lipman Brothers and Stones River Total Beverages. Food from local Murfreesboro restaurants and non-alcoholic beverages will be onsite available for purchase.

“Wine tastings like Borovino are a great opportunity to try new wines, and listen to live music while having a great time with friends – old and new!” says event organizer Natalie Vincent.

Chick-fil-a  |  2005 Old Fort Parkway
Include your entire family in this year’s Valentine’s Day celebration with a fun-filled dinner at Chick-fil-a complete with tableside service, live music and other special treats.

Make reservations by going to www.cfarestaurant.com/murfreesborotownecentre/events.

If you’re without a special someone this Valentine’s Day, have no fear. This is a great excuse to shower your dog with novelty treats from Julia’s Bakery or Pa Bunk’s Natural Market & Café. And don’t forget to call your mom. Remember, she loves you, too.

Looking for love this Valentine’s Day? It may just be in the cube next to you.

Thirty-nine percent of workers said they have dated a co-worker at least once over the course of their career; 17 percent reported dating co-workers at least twice. Thirty percent of those who have dated a co-worker said their office romance led them to the altar. This is according to CareerBuilder’s annual office romance survey of more than 4,000 workers nationwide, conducted online by Harris Interactive Nov. 1-30 last year.

Social settings outside of the office were cited most often in regard to workers connecting on a romantic level. Running into each other outside of work (12 percent), happy hours (12 percent), late nights at work (12 percent), followed by at lunch (11 percent) were among the most popular catalysts for dating co-workers.

This may be the perfect opportunity to go out for lunch or after-work drinks and get to know your co-workers a little better.

Procrastination is something that I could receive an award in yet also plagues my everyday life. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, procrastinators like myself tend to wait too late to be able to get reservations anywhere. Instead of dealing with over priced dinners and the crowds, think even more outside the box in the Murfreesboro area. The great thing about living in the middle of the state is that everything worth seeing in Tennessee is an hour away, if that. Think really outside of the box for your loved one and go outside!
If you’re worried about the cold, take your sweetheart somewhere that stays 60 degrees year around! Cumberland Caverns is a fun time year around, with beautiful formations that’s sure to dazzle anyone, and the fat man squeeze is sure you bring you and your cuddle muffin closer together! Also, if you’re looking for a bit of cultural experience, Bluegrass underground happens once a month, and sounds amazing inside the caverns!
For a unique experience, go somewhere that the crowds don’t flock to!
