Dirk Ash, principal of LaVergne Middle School, has been named the Tennessee Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals. Now designated a state winner in the MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year Program, Ash is eligible in consideration to be the National Principal of the Year. The MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year Program annually honors one middle level and one high school winner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity schools. From this pool of outstanding administrators, three national finalists will be named in each level in June. From those finalists, two national winners will be chosen by a distinguished panel of judges. The national finalists will each receive a grant of $1,500 and the national winners will receive a grant of $5,000. As a principal, Ash has proven success in involving the local community in the life of the school and has shown an astute awareness of current and emerging issues as well as a passion in improving the school’s learning environment. All state winners, including Ash, will be honored at a three-day event in Washington, DC, September 29 – October 2, 2010. Event highlights feature a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with legislators and networking with some of the best principals across the nation.
