La Vergne band gets $10K from Home Depot

On behalf of its performance contributions to the school,
community, county and state, the La Vergne High School Band recently
received a $10,000 grant from the Home Depot Foundation that was earmarked
for the renovation of the LHS Instrumental Music Facility.

The Home Depot grant was sponsored by the foundation's "Hands on Schools"
program, which was locally spearheaded by Theresa Henderson, LHS band parent
and a member of Team Depot.

“During the recent LHS winter break, Ms. Henderson and Team Depot, LHS band
parents and many LHS band students and local contractors, along with the LHS
instrumental music staff, completed the band area renovation and revitalized
the 21-year-old facility,” said Edward Freytag, director of bands at LHS.

Freytag said the project began with the Dec. 19, 2009, "demolition" of the
facility interior and ended with a Jan. 1, 2010, "board-cutting" ceremony.
The foundation grant provided for the following: new tile flooring
throughout the entire band facility, including in storage areas, practice
rooms, the music library and the uniform room; carpeting in the main
rehearsal hall and in the staff offices; new paint throughout the entire
facility; new acoustical ceiling tiles designed specifically for music
rehearsal rooms; remounting and sealing of the LHS trophy shelves on the
upper walls of the band room; and a 16-foot-long trophy display case placed
in the hallway outside the band room entrance doors.

Several local companies and contractors also contributed materials and
services to the project; namely, Scot Young at Jack's Glass, Hammer & Nails
Handyman Service, RWI, Neff Rentals, Feury Imaging, Jim 'n Nicks Bar-B-Q,
Coca-Cola, Allied Waste (now Republic Services), Glidden Paints, LHS Band
Boosters, Ryobi, Black and Decker, and HeavyQuip.

“The LHS Band Program has been quite excited about its partnership with Home
Depot on this project and is committed to a lasting relationship with the
Home Depot Foundation and Team Depot,” Freytag said.
