La Vergne adjusts water bill policy

LA VERGNE - The city of La Vergne is tightening its payment policy for water and sewer services.

Effective March 1, 2013, all payments for water and sewer services are due within 15 days of the due date. Late payments will be subject to disconnection after the 15th day.

“We had to address the city’s payment guidelines because the previous policy allowed a month and a half between the actual water use and disconnection for nonpayment,” said Bruce Richardson, interim city administrator. “It was unfair for the vast majority of our customers who pay on time to see others take advantage of the old policy and move away without paying for the water they consumed.”

Finance Director Phillis Rogers, who supervises water billing, explained there was approximately $390,000 outstanding at the end of June 2012 from accounts that are at least 120 days past due.

“Every year we have to write off a significant amount of uncollected fees as bad debt in order to balance our financial report, as required by state law. However, we still make every effort to collect on those accounts.”

Customers who are behind on payments will have three months to catch up and are urged to contact and work with the Water Billing Department rather than have their water service disrupted.
