Trial for a former sheriff’s sergeant accused of two crimes relating to a traffic fatality was set May 17.

Former Detective Sgt. Ron Killings was indicted in February 2009 with reckless homicide in the traffic death of Lakeisha White, 11, of Hopkinsville, Ky. A Hamilton County jury found him not guilty of homicide Feb. 11.

Killings faces an additional trial on charges of giving a false statement to Murfreesboro Police and tampering with evidence, accusing him of concealing liquor bottles so the containers would not be available as evidence.

Circuit Court Judge David Bragg ruled earlier since Killings’ blood-alcohol showed he was not drinking at the time, he would be unfairly prejudiced if jurors heard allegations about alcohol in his patrol car. Bragg separated the charges of give a false statement and tampering with evidence from the reckless homicide trial for a later prosecution.

Special Prosecutor Joe Baugh and Killings’ attorney Terry Fann asked Bragg Friday to set a date for the trial. Because of extensive pretrial publicity, Fann is expected to ask to choose a jury from another county. It is estimated the trial will last four days.

Killings remains free on bond while awaiting prosecution on the last two charges.

I doubt that this trial will last four days if the only issues are tampering with evidence of a violation of dept. policy and the giving of a false statement. I am surprised that Killings has not entered a plea on at least the tampering issue. I don't know what the false statement was and that may be a more serious issue but it is obviously not related to the "homicide" or it would have allowed at that trial.
(Lisa, it should read "last two charges")

Does anyone know what the basis for the False Report charge is? Are they alledging that he denied the bottles completely or that he wasn't honest about his speed? I don't think that I have ever seen anything that said one way or another.

I don't understand if the first trail found him not guilty what gives.... how, can this even be an issue, this guy along with the little girls family have all been thru enought...let it rest and get back with like. This person has been without a job for two years, he has paid enough for something that will be on his mind for the rest of his life.

The county paid out big, so they have to find fault somewhere. I can't believe the county is so weak minded. If any of you have any reason to sue the county, do so, they have already proved they will pay to avoid any kind of court battle.
