Middle school football is near the halfway point, and as usual, not much has been settled.
Last year, the Oakland Middle School Chargers went unbeaten at 9-0 and Christiana was second at 7-2. The two Christiana Cougar losses were to Oakland, once during the season and in the championship game.
One thing is still the same this year, Oakland is unbeaten at 4–0, with wins over Blackman, Christiana, Stewarts Creek and Rockvale.
The Chargers, coached by Colin Wells, averages 26 points a game and gives up only nine a contest. Oakland has won 13 in a row.
Second place is up for grabs. Rock Springs is 3-1 and plays La Vergne in a make-up game Thursday night.
Whitworth-Buchanan is also 3–1 and Rockvale is 3-2, which includes a loss to Oakland.
Oakland plays both Whitworth-Buchanan and Rock Springs in October.
Middle school is a different sort of football.
There are 10 teams in the league. There is you and nine others, but the officials will only allow eight games and one post-season game.
So, you miss playing one league team a year; Oakland doesn’t play Smyrna this year for example.
At season’s end, if you are No. 1 or No. 2, you play for a championship in late October. There are no playoffs, and bowl games are rare.
There’s lots of talent out there and lots of football left to play. Follow all of it in The Murfreesboro Post.
