JORDAN: Middle school tournaments almost here

One of my favorite weeks in local sports is almost here. The middle school basketball tournament begins next week at Blackman Middle with six games on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Because everything about Blackman Middle is first class, I assume we are in for some great games in a wonderful atmosphere and a well-organized tournament. Brackets and seeds have not yet been announced, pending the end of the regular season on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Predicting who will win is always a shaky proposition in youth sports. With that said, the Christiana girls beat second-place Blackman on Dec. 5, and the Cougars are undefeated and playing very well.

Christiana also won the Oakland Christmas Tournament for the second year in a row. Blackman suffered only that one league loss and has a game or two left. Stewarts Creek, Oakland and Rock Springs will challenge. You want an upset winner? OK, Charlotte Peay’s Oakland Chargers are very capable of beating anyone.

In boys, there is really no favorite, but perhaps it’s Whitworth-Buchanan because they beat Oakland 44-41 this past week in the school’s only game of the year. The game was at Oakland and was decided in the last minute or so.

Oakland (coached by Brad Decker) led most of the way, but Chris Hooper’s Yellow Jackets stormed back and won. Prior to the game both teams had only one league loss and both are very good.

The Chargers and Yellow Jackets have got plenty of challengers however, as Rock Springs, Siegel and Christiana are close behind. La Vergne is very capable as well. If you want an upset winner here, then take a long look at the Christiana Cougars.

This should be a great tournament.

Some reminders: There’s a full schedule of high school hoops this Saturday night. Every game is big to someone but Saturday night at Riverdale is special. Longtime rival Oakland will be there and it’s Hall of Fame night at RHS and Riverdale girls basketball reunion night.

The big monthly sports memorabilia show at Lighthouse Christian School is Saturday, Jan. 25. Go north to Bell Road, exit at exit 59 and turn left, go one-half mile and turn right on Blue Hole Road. The school is one-half mile on the right.
