Former Murfreesboro Police Commissioner Bill Jones will serve as Rutherford County campaign chair for the Sen. John McCain campaign for president.

Jones, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Korea, said he supported McCain because he wanted to do something for his country.

“I chose McCain because he is a proven leader who served his country and in the Senate,” Jones said, adding McCain supports less government intervention and less pork barrel spending.

Jones talked with McCain during a 15-minute conversation several months ago.

“He told me, ‘Bill, if I get to be president, I am going to change the way things are done in Washington,’” Jones said.

As chair, Jones and his wife Betty are campaigning during community functions and working with voters at the Republican headquarters on the downtown square.

Demand for signs and other campaign material increased substantially since (Gov. Sarah) Palin joined the ticket, the chair said.

Jones has supported McCain for about 17 months.
