Joan S. Smith, 79, of Murfreesboro, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 at Community Care of Rutherford County.

Mrs. Smith was born in Americus, Ga., to the late Charles Putman Simmons and Dora Elizabeth Riley Simmons. She attended Grace Lutheran Church and was an English Professor at Georgia Southwestern University.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dr. William L. Smith; son, Charles Luther Smith. She is survived by her son, Riley (Missy) Smith of Murfreesboro and daughter, Marilyn (Michael) Stone of Unionville; grandchildren, Michaela Stone, Max, Charlie and Georgia Smith.

Memorial service will be Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at 5:00 pm at Murfreesboro Funeral Home.
