Rutherford County Property Assessor Bill Boner will have a challenger in the Republican Primary on March 6, 2012.

Barfield community native Lance Jenkins, who previously served as deputy property assessor from 1987-2004, announced his candidacy for the county office.

“I feel my experience while serving in the assessor’s office inspired me to become the next assessor of property. ... As assessor I will strive to insure that each property owner is treated fairly and equally, and that all commercial, industrial, residential and personal property is assessed according to state law,” he said.

During his years working at the assessor’s office under retired Property Assessor Tommy Sanford, Jenkins held multiple jobs in the county department from appraiser to project coordinator to finally deputy property assessor.

“My life’s work includes time spent in both the public and private service,” Jenkins said. “I have seen both sides of the spectrum. … When I look at the public and private sectors, which have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of our growing county, they always place themselves in positions to learn and grow.”

In his years with the assessor’s office, Jenkins was actively involved in three reappraisal programs, attended more than 1,000 hours in appraisal and real estate classes, and held many professional certifications including Tennessee Certified Assessor, Real Estate Appraiser and Public Administrator.

Jenkins was raised on the farm of his grandparent, John and Roxie Jenkins, in the Barfield community. He attended Rutherford County schools and graduated from MTSU in 1985.
