Twelve glass jars filled with a flammable substance were confiscated Monday night from Tiger Hill off U.S. Highway 231 South, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Witnesses taking in a night view spotted a tote box that appeared unusual, Deputy Scott Martin reported. When opening the container, they found 12 glass Mason jars with a cloth sticking out of the lid. The jars were filled with a clear liquid.

Deputies and detectives responded to the scene where a fire tower is located atop the hill just outside of Murfreesboro.

“By looking at the jars, it is believed that someone had altered the jar lids and filled them with gas, placed a cloth in the lid as a lighting fuse and planned to use the jars as a type of homemade fire bomb,” Martin reported.

Tim Hooker, assistant director of the Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency, seized the container and moved the jars.

Hooker said the jars were housed for protection.

“It appeared to be some flammable device,” Hooker said.

The case remains under investigation.
