Indictments issued in Morrisey vehicular homicide case

Two counts of vehicular homicide were filed against a suspected drunk driver accused of killing a passenger last year.

Defendant Oketa Ojok, 24, of Gold Valley Drive was charged with vehicular homicide of John Morrissey April 24 on Thompson Lane, Officer Jason Higgins reported.

Grand jurors indicted Ojok on vehicular homicide by driving under the influence of alcohol and by driving recklessly.

Two indictments were issued for attempted murder.

Defendant Jerry L. Gardner, 36, of 805 Bradyville Pike was charged with attempted first-degree murder of victim Shelley Edwards, Murfreesboro Police Officer Michael Levy reported.

Gardner was accused of producing an AR-15 rifle and threatening to shoot her Nov. 19 in a domestic situation, Levy reported. Also, he produced a stun gun in his pocket.

Also, Keith E. Whittemore was charged with attempted first-degree murder, vehicular assault, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment with a motor vehicle, DUI (second offense) and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries.

Another set of indictments charged mother Tawana R. Whitaker, 30, of Post Drive with aggravated child abuse and neglect.

Murfreesboro Police Detective Tommy Roberts charged Whitaker after she allegedly struck her 6-year-old daughter with a studded belt because she spilled a drink Sept. 21. Her daughter suffered bruises, swelling and abrasions to her body and face.

In an unrelated case, suspect Gerald Wayne Bowen, 58, of Dilton-Mankin Road was charged with 11 counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, two count of exploitation of a minor by electronic means, six counts of solicitation of a minor for aggravated statutory rape and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon.

Sheriff’s Detective Mickey McCullough reported Bowen allegedly tried to solicit a 14-year-old girl through Internet chat rooms and sent sexual images.

In another case, defendant Christopher Dodson Eubank, 31, of Peachtree Street was charged with aggravated robbery.

Murfreesboro Police Detective James Abbott charged Eubank with robbing at gunpoint a Swifty gas station clerk of his wallet Dec. 31 on Memorial Boulevard. Officer James Smith stopped the suspect moments later.

Defendants listed above and below will be given copies of their indictments at 9 a.m. Monday in Circuit Court Judge Don Ash’s courtroom on the fourth floor of the Judicial Building. They were among 106 indictments issued by the grand jury during its April term.
