The annual Run With Scissors Off Road 5K race, sponsored by the Athletic division of the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department, is on the horizon.

The certified course, ran on multi-surfaces, will be held at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at Siegel Soccer Complex located on Cherry Lane.

“We have a group of runners that met at SportsCom three days a week and we do one race a month during the summer,” said Jennifer Joines, Wellness and Fitness coordinator at SportsCom. “Since there wasn’t a race in July, we came up with this race. The race is open for anyone. It is not just for the group that run and train at SportsCom.”

The entry fee is $25 until July 27 plus a donation of school supplies. There is no limit on the amount of supplies donated but is part of the entry fee.

Runners can register up to the day of the event.

You can walk or run the race and there are no obstacles on the course. The race will be a timed event.

You can also register for the race at SportsCom, online at rabbitroadracing.com or at the race site at Siegel Soccer Park on race day. Race day entry is $35, plus a donation of school supplies.

“We are planning on starting a year round program called TREAD for runners,” said Joines. “We’ll cross train with runner-specific programs during the year using cross training to prevent injuries and improve your running.

“TREAD is in the planning stages,” she explained, “but our program at the present is we walk, run and do different movements during our morning workouts. Run with Scissors is an off shoot of this program and gives us a 5K to add to the series of one race a month during the summer.”

If you would like to join the running group, it meets at 6 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at SportsCom. It is free and participants run a marked three-mile course. It is open to any skill level.

For more information on the race and the running program you can email Joines at jjoines@murfreesborotn.gov or call SportsCom at 895-5040.

“The Run with Scissors 5K is a great race,” added Joines. “Running on pavement and grass will be fun and it will challenge you.”
