Six kilos of cocaine with a street value of $600,00 won’t be hitting the streets of Nashville and Rutherford County after the illegal drug was intercepted Wednesday on Interstate 24, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.

K-9 Dawi gave a positive alert for the odor of narcotics in a Honda Ridgeline truck driven by illegal immigrant Floriberto Orosco Perez, 25, of Atlanta, said Lt. Chris Haynes. ICE deputies took the truck to Jim Roberts Automotive where Haynes and Sgt. Shawn Applegate searched the truck.

“Inside we located the compartment which contained six kilograms of cocaine,” Haynes said. “The cocaine was destined for Nashville. With that quantity of cocaine, there’s a good chance a pat of that would have made its way back into Rutherford County.”

Haynes charged Perez with felony possession of cocaine. He is being held on $100,000 bond in Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. Also, the federal Immigration Customs Enforcement placed a hold on the illegal immigrant for possible deportation.

Perez was stopped for a traffic violation at the 86-mile marker between the Buchanan Road and Joe B. Jackson Parkway exits of I-24. During the stop, Haynes noticed indicators of criminal activity. He obtained consent from Perez to search the truck.

Haynes and Applegate noticed a possible hidden compartment they found once dismantling the vehicle and charged Perez.

Perez’s hearing is set April 30 in General Sessions Court.

"for possible deportation"? If you are here illegally I thought they deported you as soon as possible. "Possible deportation" just does not get the job done!

It is rediculous to me that anyone could believe that Rutherford County, the State of TN, or the United States of America will do anything about these illegal immigrants that have become a plague on the south. And I say the south because now living 5000 miles away I see that the crime here is far less simply beacause these illegals haven't made it here. I am afraid of returning to the place I call my "home" because of this. When will anyone take a stand?

Another great bust by the ICE team!!! The sad part is that he probably won't be deported. Most likely he'll be sentenced to x-number of years here locally and guess what? You and I get to foot the bill to house him, feed him, and give him a warm place to stay.

"illegal immigrant Floriberto Orosco Perez, 25, of Atlanta" Isn't that statement an oxy-moron? Call him what he really is, a thug!

Nice work on his part by allowing the ICE team to search his car. I'm not saying he shouldn't of been busted and I'm glad that such a horrid drug is off the streets, but it is your civil right to disallow an officer to search your car.

Its a good thing that he didn't know his rights. Being an illegal he shouldn't have any rights to start with. Had he refused the officier's request I am sure a warrent would have been on the way in minutes.

Well believe what you would like in not allowing an officer to search your vehicle. Read the fine print, if and when there is probable cause or suspicion, you bet those officers are searching. They can place you in handcuffs and in the backseat of the patrol car, and the search warrant can be obtained through radio contact. So if you do not have anything to hide, be kind and let the officers start digging.

Great job, ICE!!!

When the dog walked around the vehicle and alerted to drugs, probable cause for search was reached. He could not stop the dog from sniffing the outside of the truck.

I agree that the qualifications for deportation should be modified, but if you really look at it, even if he is deported he will be back in the country within 6 months or less. I think that its the border security regulations that should be reformed before anything else. Personally, I am ok with footing the bill for his incarceration if the alternative is he is back running coke through my town within a few months.
