Husband accused of trying to set wife on fire

Attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping indictments were filed this month against a man accused of trying to kill his wife.

Grand jurors indicted Alfred D. Minor, 57, of Braxton Bragg Drive during a fight, sheriff’s Detective D.J. Jackson reported. Minor was accused of tying his wife’s ankles with a bath rope tie, cutting off her ponytail, shaving her head and trying to set her on fire.

In an attempted murder case, defendants Delarrious D. Crawford, 19, of Eagle Street and Clifton Williams, 18,of Riviera Drive were charged with attempted murder, especially aggravated kidnapping and especially aggravated robbery.

Sheriff’s Detective Scott Tillman reported in the arrest report Crawford, Williams and two juveniles allegedly abducted victim Jose Louis Morales-Vaquerano April 6 and took him to Coleman Road where one of the juveniles shot him in the stomach and leg and robbed him.

Defendant Haven Phongpheth, 19, of Jones Mill Road in La Vergne was charged with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Smyrna Police Detective Jeff Peach reported Phongpheth and a juvenile conspired to try to kill victim Alex Chittanavong Nov. 21 at Sharp Springs Park. They allegedly knocked him to the ground and struck him with branches before leaving him bleeding on the trail.

In a robbery case, defendant Thomas Beard, 76, of 270 S. Main St. in Eagleville was charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated assault.

Victim Patrick Davis of Rockvale reported he was working on some property when Beard approached him and fired in his direction. During a fight, Davis accused Beard of striking him in his ribs with the rifle, injuring him, and robbing him of his cell phone.

In another robbery, Raymond R. Hazzard, 45, of Sunflower Court in Smyrna and Cesar R. Luna, 19, of Lee Street in Smyrna, were charged with aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery and evading arrest.

La Vergne Police Detective David Durham reported Hazzard robbed a clerk at gunpoint at a BP station, then tried to rob a customer but the customer realized the gun wasn’t real and scuffled with Hazzard.

Hazzard fled with Luna, Durham reported. Officer Ken Atkin tried to stop them but they refused to stop initially.

In another case, Jerry L. Royster, 25, of 810 Bradyville Pike and Terrelle D. Shannon, 18, of South Rutherford Boulevard, were charged with three counts of aggravated robbery.

They were accused of robbing three men at gunpoint of $1,160 cash, a phone and cigarettes when the victims became lost on Riviera Drive.

Another indictment charged Brandon M. Fraser, 19, of Leslie Lane with rape of a woman Feb. 22. The arrest report stated Fraser gave shots of liquor to the woman before he raped her. When she vomited, co-defendant Trent A. Gay, 19, of Hampden Avenue in Rockvale was accused of touching her breasts. He was charged with sexual battery.

In a misdemeanor case, Jeffrey Lynn Barrett, 30, of Rock Springs Road in Smyrna was charged with one count of bigamy.

Wife Mattie Barrett obtained an arrest warrant accusing her husband of still being married to Mary Beth Urban when he married her June 25, 2007.

Defendants will receive copies of their indictments at 9 a.m. Monday on the fourth floor of the Judicial Building.
