A husband accused of pointing a shotgun at a bill collector was charged Monday with aggravated assault, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Suspect Carl T. Spurling, 44, of Richland-Richardson Road off Old Woodbury Highway was charged with threatening bill collected Crystal Pierce of World Financial, Deputy Mark Mack reported.

Pierce went to the home to talk with Spurling’s wife, who asked her, “Do you have to do this today?”

While Pierce was still at the home, she saw Spurling with a long gun, the deputy reported. Spurling called to Pierce.

“You’re trespassing. You have 30 seconds to get off my property before I shoot your tires and you can’t leave.”

Fearing for her safety, Pierce left and contacted the sheriff’s office, the deputy reported. She obtained an arrest warrant against Spurling.

Mack charged Spurling and booked him into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. Mack seized Spurling’s .22-caliber rifle as evidence. His hearing is set Oct. 15 in General Sessions Court.

Almost six pounds of marijuana valued at about $6,000 was confiscated after a traffic stop Monday afternoon on U.S. Highway 231 South (Shelbyville Highway), sheriff’s Deputy Will Lehew reported.

Lehew stopped driver Chadwick Dewayne Herrod because the driver’s license plate didn’t match his vehicle. He found Herrod was driving on a suspended license and took him into custody.

While inventorying his car for towing, Lehew, Deputy Christian Wrather and Deputy Joey Vann located more than five pounds of marijuana in a box. They also found bags containing marijuana, 60 plastic bags and 18 rounds of ammunition. The property was seized.

Lehew charged Herrod, 27, of Woodbury with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and fifth offense of driving on a suspended driver’s license.

A hearing on the charges is set Oct. 5 in General Sessions Court.
