Sweet tea may be the drink of the South, but there’s more to tea than satisfying thirst on a hot summer day.

By now, most people have heard about the benefits of drinking tea: Chamomile is good before bed, while drinking green tea keeps you healthy.

Tiffany Malapanes took an interest in holistic health and sought to learn more about the health remedies associated with various teas.

“I started researching different herbs and what they do for you (with regards to) health benefits,” she explained. “I took a huge interest in it [and] realized I could make my own teas.”

At first, Malapanes bought boxes and boxes of tea bags just to tear them open and experiment with different combinations. But many of the herbs she needed only came in bulk.

“I started seeing how White Willow, for example, has very similar properties at relieving pain like aspirin,” she said. “I started learning about different herbs like that, and I can’t find them all in boxed teas.”

That was five years ago.

Today, she has her own tea company, Positiffitea, that allows her to share her love and knowledge of tea while spreading a happy mindset.

“I love researching teas. I just have a huge fascination with tea and herbal medicine and Chinese medicine,” Malapanes said, adding that Positiffitea allows her to share tasty teas and health benefits with local residents.

Her teas are available at The Greenery on the Square, and she hopes to have them in coffee shops and restaurants around town. Additionally, tea drinkers can contact her directly for specific tea signatures that cater to their palates and health concerns.

Positiffiea is sold in round tins similar to Republic of Tea, but feature her own artwork on the outside and square tea bags on the inside.

Malapanes searched high and low for round tea bags, but could only order them from China.

For her, this was not an option.

“I feel it is very important to stay local,” Malapanes explained. “Everybody keeps going so far to get all this stuff, when you can just do business with your next door neighbor.”
