Howell W. Bush, 94, of Murfreesboro passed away from this life on Jan. 21, 2010 at MTMC of natural causes.
He was born one of 11 children to the late James L. and Eula Jane Mash Bush on Dec. 13, 1915 in Bradyville, Tenn. He was married to the love of his life, Lois Rogers Bush, in 1948.
He attended Bradyville Elementary School, Cannon County High School and received a B. S. degree from Tennessee Tech University, which he attended on a baseball scholarship and played baseball and basketball, and a Master’s Degree from Middle Tennessee State University.
He was an educator having taught school, coached and served as principal in various schools for 30 years in Cannon, Rutherford, Coffee, Bedford and Moore counties. He was most proud to say that while in Lynchburg he had Johnny Majors as a student. He was a staunch supporter of Tennessee Tech, especially the baseball program. He was presented an Outstanding Service Award in 2001 and endowed the lighting system for the new baseball complex built on Tech’s Campus in recent years. He also presented Rockvale and Lynchburg schools with lighted marquees for their campus. He also loved farming and raising cattle which he did until his retirement twelve years ago. He was also an avid baseball fan, especially the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves.He was a member of the Kingwood Heights Church of Christ in Murfreesboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alonzo, of Detroit, Michigan; Walter Clyde of Bowling Green, Kentucky; Oren of Woodbury, Tennessee; sisters, Beatrice and Ona, of Bradyville, Tenn., Hester Thomas and Helen Diehl of Detroit, Mich. and Thelma Staley of Shelbyville, Tenn. He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Hoyt Bush and James Bush of Detroit, Michigan and several nephews and nieces and a dear friend and caregiver, Martha Hopkins.
Visitation with the family will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at Jennings & Ayers. A chapel service will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Jennings & Ayers with Bro.
Charles Mullins and Mike Gann officiating. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers.
