Horace C. Beasley, Jr.
Horace C. Beasley, Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 at Cape Cod Hospital.

Born in Smyrna, Tennessee, Horace graduated from Central High School in Murfreesboro, TN, and earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Peabody College. During World War II he served in the 612th Army Air Corps Band.
After university, Horace played trombone professionally with dance bands, circus bands, show bands, theatre orchestras, and on radio shows. He served as first trombonist in the Nashville Symphony for several years. Horace served as director of the Concert Band and the Campus School Band for Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he conducted performance ensembles and supervised teacher preparation courses for many years. Active in many professional organizations for musicians, he also adjudicated countless festivals and clinics.

Horace was also an active civic leader. He received many service awards from organizations such as the United Way and the Governor’s Committee for the Employment of the Handicapped. He helped to start the Tennessee Vocational Training Center, was a past-president of the Association for Retarded Citizens, and past-chairman of the State Vocational Training Center Board.

More than for his professional and civic accolades, Horace will be remembered for his unselfish giving of personal time to students, friends, family and community. He had a wry and mischievous sense of humor. He lived simply – lived and loved to help others, and to fill the world with music.

Horace is survived by his son Donn Beasley of Murfreesboro, TN; son Cully Beasley, and daughter-in-law Paula Beasley, of Centerville, MA; grandson Richard Miller of Savannah, GA; granddaughter Cindy Gaschler of Ellis, KS; granddaughters Erin, Katie and Kristen Beasley of Centerville, MA; and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maribeth Fenstermacher Beasley, daughter, Marilyn C. Miller both of Murfreesboro.

Visitation with the family will be from 4-8 PM, Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Jennings & Ayers Funeral home. A church service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, Feb. 22, at the First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, TN with Rev. Michael O'Bannon officiating. Burial will follow in the Mapleview Cemetery in Smyrna, TN.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The ALS Association or The American Diabetes Association.
