Independence Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Known as America’s birthday, July 4 celebrates our freedom as a sovereign nation.
Today, Americans continue to enjoy their freedom thanks to the service of veterans and active duty military personnel. This year, the American Red Cross asks you to honor our brave service members and help save lives through your blood donations.
While all blood types are needed during the summer months, we urge those eligible donors with type O-negative blood to make and keep appointments to give blood this summer. Type O-negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.
Once you donate blood, you can go to redcrossracing.com and report your donation and get Red Cross Racing points.
These points may be exchanged for exclusive racing gear and other exciting prizes.
The American Red Cross, Greg Biffle and 3M Racing are proud to offer you one more way to show your patriotism by giving you the chance to donate your Red Cross Racing points back to the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces (SAF).
Your donated points will help the Red Cross provide services, programs and goods to our troops and their families. Our 7,000 SAF volunteers and staff offer resources like emergency communications, support for wounded warrior programs, hospital outreach, veterans programs and assistance for families coping with the stress of deployment.

Red Cross Racing members who present to donate between Thursday, July 1 and Monday, July 5 get 75 bonus points added to their Red Cross Racing accounts.
The summer months are an important time to donate, as all types of blood are needed, especially type O negative.
Locally, you may give blood on the following dates:
• Friday, July 9, from noon to 5 p.m. at Wal-Mart located at 570 Enon Springs Road in Smyrna.
• Monday, July 12, from noon to 5 p.m. at North Rutherford YMCA located at 2001 Motlow College Blvd. in Smyrna.
• Tuesday, July 13, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Grace Church located at 108 Stones River Road in LaVergne.
In addition, the Murfreesboro Donor Center located at 836 Commercial Court is open:
• 1st, 4th and 5th Sunday, 7 a.m. to 12 noon
• Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Tuesday & Wednesday, Closed
• Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon

All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 with completed Parental Consent Form).
