Honest student rewarded for deed | Dallas Blackwell, Arby's

Nashville area Director of operations for Arby’s Restaurant Group’s Melissa Howard (L) and Area Supervisor Paul Smith present Dallas Blackwell with a check for $1,000. Blackwell found an envelope of cash in an Arby's parking lot and return it to MPD.
The young man who found and returned more than $1,000 to its owner got his just rewards Thursday.

After hearing about Dallas Blackwell’s honesty and integrity, Arby’s Restaurant Group gave the MTSU student a check for $1,000 to use as he wishes.

When you hear of somebody like this, who was honest enough to do this, … we wanted to do something for him,” said Melissa Howard, director of operations for Arby’s Restaurant Group’s Nashville area.

Howard said Arby’s corporate mission is to work with honest and integrity, so the company wanted to reward Blackwell for his good deed.

Blackwell, 22, was surprised by all the attention he has gotten, including the check from Arby’s and community response for returning the envelope with $1,200 inside.

“I have had a lot of people contact me and just say ‘thank you’ for doing what I did,” he said, adding one woman said he restored her faith in humanity.

He’ll put the money to good use too, he said. He plans on putting it in his college fund so he can finish his degree in music performance at MTSU and possibly by a new bicycle.

Blackwell, a pizza cook, found an envelope containing the cash a couple weeks ago in the Arby’s restaurant parking lot on Northwest Broad Street. He asked managers if anyone reported the loss of the money. When he couldn’t find the owner, he turned the cash into Murfreesboro Police.

Blackwell said he turned in the cash “because it was the right thing to do. The person that money belonged to probably needed it more than I did.”

Blackwell met the owner of the cash, who was very grateful and gave him $100 for his honesty.

As father of the man who lost the cash, I salute this young man....it should be a national story of inspiration....as a family, we thank young Mr. Blackwell and salute Arby's for being good corporate citizens of our community.
Our son, a hard-working truck-driving man, has been hit by the recession, and the loss of that cash had hit him hard, economically speaking...
