Dallas Blackwell doesn't believe in "finder's keepers."
When Blackwell found more than $1,000 cash Wednesday, he immediately tried to locate the owner.
“I was tempted afterward,” admitted Dallas Blackwell, 22, of Rutherford Boulevard.
Blackwell, a pizza cook, found an envelope containing the cash about 7:45 p.m. in the Arby’s restaurant parking lot on Northwest Broad Street. He asked managers if anyone reported the loss of the money. When he couldn’t find the owner, he turned the cash into Murfreesboro Police.
Officer Patrick Rottero placed the found money in evidence until the owner claims it.
The person who owns the money may claim it by contacting records Lt. Alvin Baird at Murfreesboro Police Department at 302 S. Church St.
Blackwell said he turned in the cash “because it was the right thing to do. The person that money belonged to probably needed it more than I did.”
He’s already received one reward for his efforts.
“My friend’s taking me out to eat lunch,” Blackwell said.
Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans commended Blackwell.
“The person who turned it in is an honest individual,” Evans said of Blackwell. “We hope the rightful owner comes forward and identifies the money.”

Young Mr. Blackwell has just earned something no amount of money can buy. Trust and respect.

What happens to the money if no one claims it?

after so many days the money becomes the property of the finder, if not claimed by the owner.

It will be interesting to see if the rightful person gets their money back. Now that this story is public, any good scam artist could claim the money. What if the rightful owner can not produce any proof that the money is his? If I dropped a $100 bill, I can't prove it's mine a day later. Write a follow up story if they owner gets his money.

OH, I forgot to say that Mr. Blackwell is a patriot!

Channel 5 News said the rightful owner has to identify the type of envelope it was in as well as the amount. Let's hope the media can keep those details quiet.
They also said if the money is not claimed in 6 months it belongs to the person who found it.
What an honest young man! Wow.

Channel 5 News HD reported this morning if the money is not claimed in 6 months, Mr. Blackwell will get the money.

It is good to know that there are still honest people out there! Way to go Mr. Blackwell! You sure will get your rewards later...I too would like to see a follow-up to see if it is returned to the owner or given to Mr. Blackwell.

I've written a book about 'Character and Virtue' and would like to speak with Mr. Blackwell about his experience. Would you be so kind to pass this along to him, as he may contact me at; garry at characterhappens dot com. Thank You.

We lost $100cash on a ride in Disneyland and they said go to lost and found on the "WAY THE HECK OTHERSIDE" of the park to see if anyone turned it in...i laughed. IT WAS THERE, folded just as my husband had had it in his pocket !!! We bought a souvenier money clip right then!
People are more honest than we generally give them credit.
BTW- if the $1000 was drug deal money...the owner probably won't claim it...the police should fingerprint it and see what comes up.

Maybe we need to take this story to Oprah.

Admiral, yes, channel 5 said that but thats not how it works. The city would get it. Doesn't matter anyhow, the owner was made aware of this story and is about to claim it.

Well the owner should give Mr. Blackwell a nice chunk of reward change else he would never have his money back.

I suggest the found money of the ‘Dallas Blackwell Event,’ to be a pittance many would gladly pay for the recognition and acclaim he so richly deserves. Honesty, today, is unique. Blackwell’s utterance; “...because it was the right thing to do...” defines few individuals. He will be rewarded every day of his life.
