Local builders, subcontractors and building supply stores are asking Good Friday Tornado victims to support the local economy by using local companies in their rebuild.

Jeff Waddell, a local subcontractor, recently launched a Web site where those needing work on their home can locate a local builder or subcontractor.

RebuildMurfreesboro.com features more than 200 local builders and subcontractors available to work in the rebuild.

“It is still a work in progress, but it is exploding, Waddell said of the Web site.

Jim Averwater, past president of the Rutherford County Home Builders Association, said he thinks the Web site and sign campaign is good for the local economy.

“If people spend their money locally, it will stay here and help everybody,” said the owner of Averwater Construction.

Much of the rebuilding after the April 10 tornados has yet to begin as many homeowners are still awaiting visits from their insurance adjuster.

“Very soon it is going to be hectic,” Averwater said.

Even so, local contractors say there are plenty of local companies and workers to do the job.

It is likely to be a boon for local builders and subcontractors who have largely struggled over the last year and a half, Waddell, owner of J&W Construction, said.

But even using local contractors, homeowners should do their research and ask a lot of questions before hiring a company.

Here’s a list of do's and don'ts to should follow during the rebuilding process.

1) Use only local contractors.
2) Do research; take time before you make this important decision.
3) Ask for a list of references and check them.
4) Call the Better Business Bureau, Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, Rutherford County Homebuilders Association, Middle Tennessee Association of Realtors, etc.
5) Make sure they are licensed & insured in the state of Tennessee.
6) Ask about a warranty.
7) Ask friends, family and church members for recommendations.
8) Don't be afraid to ask questions, if you don't understand, ask more questions.
9) Always get a receipt.


A few don'ts!
1) Do not use out of state contractors.
2) Never give money up front.
3) Do not use unlicensed general contractors.
4.) Do not show perspective contractors your insurance estimate.
