Don’t you love/dread the holidays?

Hammerhead loves them ... as long as he gets to do what he enjoys. Otherwise, he tends to be bored stiff. There’s not much in between.

One thing both Hammerhead and Betty Lou both enjoy is the annual “Celebrate Christmas Downtown” right on the historic Square in Murfreesboro.

Naturally, they have different reasons for enjoying the event, which is set for Friday, Dec. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. Betty Lou enjoys the excitement on children’s’ faces and the shopping opportunities. Hammerhead likes it because it reminds him of his childhood. Betty Lou thinks its perfect for grandson, Jake.

Back in the day ... I think Stonewall Jackson was president then ... when you said Christmas shopping you meant on the Square in uptown Murfreetown. The bustling crowds, the wondrous window displays and the annual chat with Santa Claus at the Hobby Shop.

There was Woolworth’s and McClellan’s and the monstrous Goldstein’s Department store.

Or you could wind your way down the Nashville Pike to that city of dreams, Nashville and stores like Harvey’s and Cain-Sloan. Those were the days a boy got toy six shooters, rifles and bowie knives and didn’t go psychotic. Heck, little girls got those sometimes as well in the days when electric trains and Chatty Cathy dolls were technological wonders.

Well anyway....

In Hammerhaid’s book, you can sum up the entire event by the simple phrase: “Santa Claus is coming to town.”

And just like in the olden moldy days, Santa is coming to town astride a gleaming fire truck. Unfortunately, Hammerhead is a little too overly large to sit on the Jolly O' Elf’s lap and ask for that 72-inch HD TV.

While Santa is the highlight for Hammerhead and all the other kids, there are activities for just about any age group. Church choirs, dance groups, music ensembles will be performing. Storytellers will tell classic yuletide stories. And talking about another magic word ... there’s FREE hot chocolate.

Following the tree lighting, Santa heads to his holiday workshop inside the Rutherford County Courthouse where he'll hear youngsters' wishes and pose for photographs. Undoubtedly, he will ignore Hammerhead. The Jolly Ol' Elf will also be there on Saturdays, Dec. 8, 15 and 22, 12-4 p.m. The workshop is also open on Fridays, Dec. 14 and 21, 5-7 p.m.

And Friday night’s event isn’t the only major holiday shindig in what’s shaping up to being the busiest weekend of this season. The conclusion of Santa’s Wonderland at Patterson Community Center, “A Christmas Story” at the Center for the Arts, the Oaklands Candlelight Tour of Homes, Cannonsburgh Christmas. Bethlehem Marketplace and the Smyrna Tour of Homes are all scheduled for Saturday. Whew! Pick the one you haven’t attended and go. Two of the events, Christmas at Cannonsburgh and the reenactment of Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth are both free.

On Sunday, Bethlehem Marketplace continues along with the annual Murfreesboro Christmas Parade at 2:30 p.m. downtown.

So there ya go.
