Holiday Brites: Christmas is finally here | Holiday Brites, Top 10, Christmas

Murfreesboro's favorite holiday light display still resides at 1918 Hamilton Drive. TMP/M. West
It’s no surprise that Murfreesboro’s most spectacular Holiday Brite is still found at 1915 Hamilton Drive.

A repeat winner of the annual Murfreesboro Post contest, the computerized high-tech light show is the project of Bill and Kevin Maxwell and Sandra Elgin.

Located about a mile from Mitchell-Neilson Elementary School, a good way of seeing the house is to head down Jones Boulevard, where several nicely decorated homes are located.

In particular is the home of Ken Hermes at 1726 Jones Blvd.

The Hermes house is loaded with decorations including a hand painted Santa and his sleigh. Just past the Hermes home, hang a left turn on Dogwood, then a right onto Hamilton.

Don’t be surprised if there is a wait to see the Maxwell-Elgin display. Please obey the signs and don’t block neighbors’ driveways.

Tune in to FM 89.1 on your car radio to hear a special Christmas message from the Maxwells. That’s the best (make that only) way to hear the music the computerized light show is synchronized to.

While you’re in the neighborhood, proceed down Hamilton to Northfield Boulevard. Turn right to catch the largest collection of holiday figures you’ve ever seen in Murfreesboro.

Then cruise on down Northfield across Memorial and across Lascassas Pike. On the left, just at the end off the Kroger shopping center, you will catch the bright lights of the Proctor family home at 2423 Norris Lane.

Another great computerized light show, the Proctors show features more than 20,000 colored lights that sweep from one end of their yard to the other in unison with Gene Autry’s version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” 'Tis a holiday show that you shouldn’t miss.

If you have time, take a swing through the rest of Garrison Cove subdivision, which is home to several beautiful displays. In particular note the huge, red Christmas tree of lights at the corner of Nightwalk Court and Garrison Cove.

Still in the mood for more holiday brites?

Then hang a left on Lascassas Pike and connect up with Middle Tennessee Boulevard, when you get to East Main, take a right and enjoy the holiday look of that historic street.

You should take a detour onto South Highland and check out the beautiful lights of the Bill Steber home.

The historic home is covered with lights…they even hang in straight lines from the top of the tall trees, but the bright effect seems subdued after seeing those of the Maxwell and Proctor homes.

From there…

You might venture out into the “country” by taking Church Street all the way to Barfield-Crescent Road.

You can’t miss the display at the rural home at 4598 Barfield-Crescent Road.

One of the biggest, most elaborate displays in the county, it features music and tons of lights, even a riverboat followed by a smiling Loch Ness-style monster.

Or if you don’t want to drive that far, check out colorful Oakside Court near Scales Elementary School.

Oakside Court is a short street filled with gorgeously decorated homes. Look for the Blue Christmas trees at the top of the little avenue. That’s a house that would do Elvis proud.

Color photography really doesn’t capture the charm at the Proctor home on Norris Lane near Kroger’s at the corner of Northfield and New Lascassas Road. This house has more than 20,000 colored lights and features Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

While you are in the neighorhood, check out the colorful lights of Garrison Cove including this huge, red Christmas tree on Nighthawk Court.

Outside of town on Barfield-Crescent Road is the county’s largest holiday display, featuring so many lights that it’s impossible to get them in one picture.

Located near Hamilton Drive, the Ken Hermes home on Jones Boulevard has tons of colorful lights in addition to a life-size Santa and his reindeers.

Just off beautiful East Main Street is the colorful Steber home on East Highland Avenue. The dreamlike display even features lights hanging from trees.

Elvis would be proud of this Blue Christmas-themed home located on Oakside Court near Scales Elementary School.
