Hobgood Elementary lead the pack as it was named a distinguished school in academic achievement.

"We are truly excited that Hobgood Elementary is receiving this National Honor,” Murfreesboro City Schools Interim Director Carolyn Tucker said.

“(Principal Barbara) Sales, the faculty, and staff have truly worked to provide optimal educational opportunities for the students,” she continued. “Hobgood is proof that dedication, determination, and a focus on instruction will cause students to achieve gains."

Hobgood and three other Tennessee Title I schools have been named 2010 Title I Distinguished Schools for exceptional student performance overall, or for significantly closing the achievement gap between student groups.

“These schools prove that the ability to achieve is not hindered by socioeconomic status,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said. “I want to congratulate each school for setting the bar high. This is a well-deserved honor.”

Hobgood was honored for “closing the achievement gap” between at-risk and other students. Hamilton County’s East Ridge Elementary, Bradford City Schools’ Bradford Elementary and Hawkins County’s Keplar Elementary were also honored.

“These schools set high expectations for students and give them the necessary tools and resources to reach those goals,” said Dr. Julie McCargar, Executive Director of Federal Programs. “These schools will serve as a model for the nation of what works so more students can benefit.”

Title I is a distinction given to schools that serve a large percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

All schools provide students the opportunity to achieve at high levels, strong professional development, coordination with other programs and partnerships with parents and the community.

Hobgood is a NASA Explorer School, which builds on a relationship between the NASA and the school. NASA Explorer Schools use new teaching resources and technology tools for elementary and middle school students using NASA's unique content, experts and other resources.
