Smoopy’s, a custom bicycle shop, has parted with a couple of its vintage treasures to benefit local children at Project Help.
Andrew Logan, owner of Smoopy’s, is eager to see the perfectly restored “his and hers” 1961 Murray cruisers placed for auction at “Saddle Up for Project Help” on Thursday, July 29. The father of two is a Murfreesboro native with a strong desire to help his community.
“It was the right thing to do. I really believe in the cause,” he said.
Logan has had a longstanding love for bicycles, having worked with them for 12 years, with the last six devoted to restoring vintage bikes.
According to Logan, vintage bikes are solid and well-made.
“They ride better, and they look better,” he said. Smoopy’s customers can bike with a clear conscience too. Smoopy’s vintage bikes are easy on the environment, as reclaimed parts are used whenever possible.
“The best way to ‘go green’ is to ride a bike,” he said.
Vintage bicycles are all the rage on every college campus. Their popularity has definitely seeped into the consciousness of urban dwellers, appealing to young professionals and baby boomers alike.
Logan said that although Murfreesboro’s Greenway system is great, there is still room for improvement for the city to become truly “bike friendly.”
Although he acknowledges the serious sport cyclists, he understands that many people long for a return to bike riding for the sheer pleasure of it.
“We bike because we like it; that’s why we do this. Get on the Greenway and just ride your bike,” he said, and if you don’t have a cool bike, he knows exactly where you can get one. Smoopy’s is located just past downtown Murfreesboro at 2602 Woodbury Pike.
To bid on the vintage bikes from Smoopy’s, attend “Saddle Up for Project Help”, slated for Thursday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m., on the Tower Club Level of MTSU’s Floyd Stadium.
For only $50 per ticket, guests will be treated to a fun, casual western-themed evening with a barbecue dinner, live entertainment from Daniel Rothwell with Thomas Maupin, then music from “Jack and Diane”.
The event’s “country fair” atmosphere will feature a silent auction as well as artists at work. Two custom playhouses built and donated by Haynes Brothers and Ole South Properties will be auctioned that evening, as well.
