Riverdale spotted homestanding Smyrna a 20-0 first quarter lead, but then unleashed Adam Davenport who scored four touchdowns on runs as the Warriors rallied for an exciting 30-27 win.
The win keeps Riverdale even with Blackman in the District 7AAA playoff race. Both teams are 3-0 in league play after the Blaze remained undefeated overall with a hard-fought 10-3 win over Siegel.
Oakland remained in the district race at 2-1, a narrow loss to Riverdale, with a 45-21 decision over La Vergne.
Smyrna smacked Riverdale early, taking advantage of a short punt and fumble recovery to strike quickly with Jeremiah Bryson scoring twice, once on a 14-yard run and another on a 20-yard screen pass from quarterback Steve Wilson who also threw a screen for a score to Teeray Malone.
Then Davenport went bezerk.
He scored on runs of 80, 74 and contributed to a long Riverdale drive that ended with a 42-yard Grayson Powell field goal just before halftime to cut the Smyrna lead to 20-16.
Davenport certainly didn’t cool off at intermission.
Following a Warrior fumble recovery, the speedy Davenport zipped 14 yards to give Riverdale its first lead of the night and not long after went 34 yards to set the Warriors’ final total and a 30-20 lead.
Smyrna made a final rally, marching down the field behind Bryson’s running and Wilson’s passing, scoring with just under three minutes to play on Wilson’s pass to B.J. Whiteaker.
The Bulldogs’ hopes to come back died, however, when Davenport hammered out four yards on a critical third down to let Riverdale run out the clock.
Davenport finished with a phenomenal 255 yards rushing on 13 carries.
