MTCS claimed a critical District 9A victory to sweeten homecoming Friday night, blanking Huntland on a wet evening in Throneberry Stadium.
The win lifts the Cougars to 3-1 in district play and sticks Huntland with its first league loss. The Cougars are 3-5 overall and face another key district game next week against Cascade, undefeated in district play going into last night.
Led by Nathan Coates, MTCS kept Huntland at bay defensively throughout the first half and turned back a last-minute drive inside the 10 to preserve the shutout.
Two turnovers boosted the Cougars drive to a 28-0 lhalftime lead which held to the end.
Coates zipped 65 yards in the first quarter for what proved to be all the points MTCS needed for the win.
Coates added a two-yard scoring run later after a Brad Chambers’ fumble recovery.
R.J. Miller scored on a 34-yard run while racking up more than 100 yards rushing for the night while quarterback Ivey Sterling finished the scoring on a four-yard sneak after Huntland muffed a punt.
Most area teams were not in action Friday night due to public schools’ fall break.
