Civil War buffs have the unique opportunity to witness funeral services on March 8 for a Confederate captain who rode with Gen. John Hunt Morgan’s raiders.

Services for Capt. M.N. Cox are scheduled for 2 p.m. March 8 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville on the 145th anniversary of his death.

Marmadue Norfleet Cox was captain of Co. H, Ward’s 9th Tennessee Cavalry, Morgan’s Raiders. The Nashville resident was captured during Morgan’s “Great Ohio Raid” and imprisoned at Johnson’s Island prisoner of war camp, where he died. Cox’s remains were recovered by friends and returned to Nashville where he was buried in an unmarked grave at Mt. Olivet.

His grave has been relocated and a headstone was set in place in 2008. Services will include the reading of the eulogy originally written for Cox by Lt. W.H. Tindall. Guest speakers, civilan and military re-enactors and period musicans will participate.

Participating organizations include the Una Neighborhood Association, the Gen. Joseph E. Johnston Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the 48th Confederate Infantry, Huwald’s Battery and the Tennessee Scots Pipe Band.

Mt. Olivet is located at 1101 Lebanon Road, Nashville. The cemetery has been in operation since 1856.
