Then MTSU and the American Red Cross need you – and the rest of the community – to “bleed blue” Oct. 3-5! Your gift will help MTSU beat Western Kentucky, again, in the good-natured annual rivalry to collect the most units of blood to help replenish local blood banks. And, most importantly, you’ll help save lives.
MTSU is asking students, faculty, staff, alumni and the surrounding community to help beat the 2011 total collection goal of 1,050 units of blood.
The winner of the 2011 “Bleed Blue-Beat WKU” drive will be announced at halftime of the MTSU-WKU game at Floyd Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 6.
MTSU is the rivalry’s reigning champion, collecting 551 of last year’s 1,059 units of blood and beating Western at football last November in their home stadium.
Since each blood donation can help up to three people, the two universities’ efforts helped 3,177 hospital patients last year, Red Cross officials said.
MTSU’s collection site is the Student Health, Wellness and Recreation Center, located just off Rutherford Boulevard on the east side of campus.
Blood donors will have free reserved parking at the Rec Center all three days! (That alone should be enough to get you to campus!) Campus and off-campus donors alike can give blood on:
• Monday, Oct. 3, from noon to 6 p.m.;
• Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and
• Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Walk-in donors will be welcomed, but you also can make an appointment online NOW to avoid a wait. Go to www.redcrossblood.org, click the blue “Enter Sponsor Code” box in the middle of the page and then enter “mtsu19” to make an appointment. Then put it on your calendar and remember to eat well and get extra rest a few days before your donation.
Donors will need to bring a blood donor card and driver’s license, or two other forms of identification to check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (or 16 with a completed Parental Consent Form). All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply.
