Heat won't ease until Tuesday night

The National Weather Service warns of dangerously hot and humid conditions that will affect most of the mid-state through Tuesday night.

A strong high-pressure system will focus heat and humidity over Middle Tennessee through Tuesday.

Hot temperatures combined with high humidity levels will send heat index values into the 105-112 degree range across much of the mid-state.

These conditions represent a direct threat to the health and well being of area residents.

Temperatures topped out in Murfreesboro at 95 degrees Monday and are expected to hit 98 degrees Tuesday.

The heat is expected to ease by Wednesday.

Those most susceptible to the heat will be children, the elderly and people with chronic ailments.

Heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke are possible due to prolonged exposure to the heat.

Take extra precautions if you must work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Wear lightweight and loose-fitted clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke in an emergency - call 911.
