A Rutherford County man charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with a shooting at Hanover Apartments is scheduled to appear Nov. 7 in General Sessions Court for a preliminary hearing.
La Vergne resident Edrick L. Smith, 29, is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
He was taken into custody Oct. 21, one week after he allegedly shot Muriel Glimps, 40, and Lokesial Sanders, 41, while the two sat in a car outside of the apartment complex.
Glimps’ 6-year-old daughter was seated in the backseat of the car when the women were shot, but she was not injured.
“Detective Michael Yates and the Crime Scene Unit did a great job investigating this case, as they do all cases,” said Kyle Evans, public information officer for the Murfreesboro Police Department.
On Oct. 14, Officer Marja Atchley responded to reports of a shooting at about 11 p.m. in the parking lot of Hanover Apartments, where she discovered one female, later identified as Glimps, covered in blood.
“She was pleading with me to help her and her friend,” Atchley reported. “I made contact with the second victim, who was identified as Sanders… She had been shot in the chest area.”
Before being transported to the hospital, Sanders described the suspect’s appearance and told Atchley he “asked what Glimps’ name was, then pulled out a gun and started shooting into the vehicle,” according to the incident report.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot toward Old Lascassas Pike.
A K-9 Unit arrived on the scene but was unable to track the suspect, and police later learned he had fled in a silver Ford Crown Victoria.
When investigators showed mug shots of men who matched the suspect’s description, both women identified Smith as the shooter.
A few days later, investigators received anonymous tips claiming that Smith had been in the Murfreesboro area since the shooting. They were also provided with information about Smith’s possible whereabouts and the name of his girlfriend, Lakeisha Nivens, according to the arrest report.
Officers Christopher Gann and Anthony Skok arrested Smith when he arrived with Nivens at his mother’s home, located on Meigs Drive in Murfreesboro.
Smith had stayed with his mother, Nancy Alexander, the night before.
Alexander told police “she believed he was innocent,” but she convinced him to return home and surrender to police over concerns for his safety “due to possible retaliation,” Gann reported.
Smith, who is a convicted felon, has a rap sheet dating back more than 10 years.
In July 2008, he was charged with aggravated burglary for allegedly breaking into an Appomattox Drive home occupied by a 13-year-old girl, who was at home alone.
“Smith has been arrested seven times since November 2000 by our agency, on charges ranging from robbery to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,” Sgt. Dan Goodwin said, during a 2008 interview with The Murfreesboro Post. “He has spent a total of 1,555 days in jail during those years.”
At the time, Goodwin served as the public information officer for the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
Evans said the Police Department does not comment on a suspect’s criminal history or background.
He also said he could not discuss a possible motive for the shooting, but he added that more details would be made public during the preliminary hearing.
However, he did note that the public’s help is always appreciated.
“Information from the community is always critical to solving cases,” he said. |
